Let's Talk Pits!

Hello lovelies,

Let’s talk pits!

For about 8 months now I have been using an all natural* deodorant rather than my previous fave “Dove Powder Invisible Antiperspirant Stick.” *Disclaimer: when I say “all natural” I mean no synthetics, preservatives or aluminum. “Natural” gets thrown around a lot these days and I don’t want to deceive anyone.

TO BE VERY CLEAR : I am not a doctor. I am not a scientist. I am aware that there is no solid scientific evidence that proves that aluminum or any of the other ingredients in deodorants/antiperspirants are harmful to your body. BUT as a result of my genetics, I am at a higher risk of developing breast cancer than most other people my age, therefore I tend to go over the top when it comes to taking certain precautions. Deodorants, body lotions, and any other topical creams/products that I apply directly to my skin (which, let’s not forget is the LARGEST ORGAN in the human body…) are just one main grouping of products that I like to be extra careful with. While they are topical, your skin is still extremely porous, therefore I try my hardest to only apply something to the outside of my body, if it is equally as safe for the inside of my body. Let’s get started!

Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant

Deodorant neutralizes (or sometimes just mask the smell of) odour-causing bacteria.

Antiperspirant clogs the sweat ducts so that sweat (a.k.a.bodily waste) cannot be properly excreted from your body.

Here are the complete ingredients lists for the Dove antiperspirant that I used to use, and the natural deodorant that I am currently using:

Dove Powder Invisible Solid Antiperspirant Stick: Cyclopentasiloxane, Stearyl Alcohol, Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex GLY, Isopropyl Palmitate, PPG-14 Butyl Ether, Talc, Paraffinum Liquidum, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Dimethicone, Parfum, PEG-8, BHT.

This is the only deodorant/antiperspirant that I have ever used and I loved it! I am not saying anything bad about this deodorant… it worked, smelled great and was affordable! For me and my own peace of mind, however, I made the switch to an all natural brand. As I mentioned above, I am extra careful about the products I apply to my skin and for me, this was one step that I wanted to take to making my daily routines more healthy.

My Current Fave…

Saje Au Natural Crystal Fresh Deodorant Stick: alumen (potassium alum) = mineral salt that fights odour by neutralizing the odour-causing bacteria rather than just hiding the smell they cause with perfumes. It is smooth, lacks stickiness, and does not clog pores or stain clothes.

Saje Crystal Fresh Deodorant Spray (Scent: Exotic): water, alumen, patchouli, palmarosa, lavender, vanilla, ho wood, sandalwood, champa. It produces a fine mist and, like the crystal, does not clog pores or stain clothes (trust me on this one… during desperate times I have even sprayed it on me like a body spray and it did not leave any marks)!

How to Use:

STEP 1 : Crystal

Remove cap, hold crystal under warm water for a second, roll directly onto underarms (follow by rinsing off the crystal and replacing cap).

STEP 2 : Spray

Pump 2-3 sprays under each arm.

In closing... if you are someone who, like me, was extremely intimidated by making the transition to healthier, cleaner products, then my advice to you is this:

Don’t stress about doing it all at once.

Take your time finding products that you are comfortable with and that you really love, and just take it one step at a time. The reality is that cosmetics and other body products are HELLA EXPENSIVE, and throwing out everything you have in your current routine is just not realistic for most people. While I have been lucky enough to find affordable alternatives for my base body products such as deodorant, body lotion, and facial moisturizer, I am still using other non-natural products such as my Smashbox contour kit because THAT SHIZ IS EXPENSIVE and I am not perfect. Are there cleaner brands out there that make nice makeup? HELL YES! And it is my mission to eventually hunt them down and test them out for you guys; just be patient with me because it takes some time (and $$$) to test out different brands and give them an honest review. Have you tried any other natural deodorants? Comment down below and let me know your faves!

Yours Happily,

Kristyn
